Expats in Spain - Their Story
ExpatsInSpain.co.uk
Graham and his wife Joyce decided one day that they had had enough of life in Britain. They had been to Spain a number of times on holiday, and felt that this was where their future lay.
Spain had so much to offer - the sun, relaxed way of life, lower cost of living, cheaper property - everything they desired. All they had to do was sell their home in the UK and look for a suitable property in Spain, but away from the usual tourist destinations.
What they found when they did eventually move came as a bit of a culture shock. Spanish workmen can be very laid back. The home Graham and Joyce purchased took longer than the builders originally promised. But, once the move was completed settling in went reasonably smoothly.
Through this site Graham has tried to take visitors through some of the steps needed in order to reside in Spain. These cover things such as legal permits required under Spanish law, how to go about getting health provisions, driving regulations, setting up utilities for the new home and banking.
There are lots of wonderful things to see and do in Spain. Being close to the sea meant that it was easy to travel to the coastal towns, many where virtually all the residents and tourists were the Spanish themselves. This site takes a look at some of those places.
Many expats who move to Spain are pensioners, on fixed incomes. Because of the worsening exchange rate, the pounds they receive are worth fewer Euros nowadays. Sadly, this has caused many pensioners to put their homes up for sale and return to the UK.
Unfortunately, unemployment in Spain is on the rise. Jobs are getting harder to obtain, especially for non-Spanish. Nevertheless, there is still work available for British expats, though limited. Much of the work is in bars and entertainment industry. The subject of employment is discussed in some depth
